Arturo Armendariz Distinguished Service Award

Edward "Mike" McMillian - 2013 recipient

Mike McMillan has dedicated more than 40 years to the cattle-feeding business. After serving as a Marine, Mike came to the industry in 1971 as a cattle checker on Monfort’s original feedyard north of Greeley, Colo. He quickly began working his way up the company while working on his associate’s degree from Aims Community College and bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado.

Mike had a reputation of being dependable, getting the job done no matter what, going above and beyond the call of duty and leaving no detail overlooked. He has maintained this reputation throughout a career of more than 40 years and several ownership and regime changes.

An innovative thinker, Mike recognized early-on the benefits of water conservation and was instrumental in designing and building the first tank overflow filter/treatment stations long before sustainability was in fashion.

Always a driving force, Mike helped transform the JBS Five Rivers Kuner Feedlot into one of the most efficient feedyards in the world. His compassion and commitment to the company, crews and cattle was evident in his mentoring and teaching, helping to shape them into hardworking employees and leaders.

Mike’s strong work ethic, ingenuity and tenacity led him to be successful in a career brimming with challenges. The cattle under his care, along with his coworkers, company and the cattlefeeding industry are better for him
